Masterclass in Wound Care Delivered by Bacolod Expert

Dr. Chinkin Coruña provided new insight on advance wound care appliances and their outcomes from his patient population in Negros Island. Dr. Coruña is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot, ankle, and wound based in Bacolod. He educated professional on pressure injury prevention in the Operating Room.

We extend warm congratulations to Dr. Chinkin Coruña for his active participation during the 6th Annual Convention of the Philippine Orthopedic Wound Care and Diabetic Limb Society in Quezon City last September 12-13, 2025. The theme of this year’s meeting was Elevating Prevention into Practice, Driving a Culture of Skin Protection, a topic he educates consistently on a distinct and expert level.

Dr. Chinkin was given the honor of delivering a lecture explaining how silicone-based foam dressings can prevent pressure injuries during surgery by reducing shear, friction, and moisture imbalance. He outlines when and where to apply these dressings, the evidence behind them, and how to integrate their use into routine surgical preparation for safer, more skin-friendly operations. This was followed by a hands-on workshop applying prophylactic dressings.

Participants were able to practice applying silicone foam dressings to high-risk anatomical sites using mannequins and props. Guided by Dr Coruña, the workshop focused on correct placement, securement, and teamwork during surgical prep. The session reinforced that skin protection begins before positioning, with practical skills that translate directly into safer patient care.

Finally, Dr. Coruña presented a Masterclass synthesizing many aspects of the event through an interdisciplinary session unifying the learning experience. Participants analyzed real cases of preventable skin harm, identified system gaps, and applied prevention tools in caregiver simulation exercises.

Dr. Chinkin proudly represents Western Visayas as faculty for these important events with a wide audience of allied health personnel from all over the Philippines attending. Bacolod City and Negros Island have a profound role in wound care education for the country, and the Asia Pacific region, represented by international delegates and industry partners supporting.
