Canlaon Medical Society Holds Turnover Rites

Dr. Chinkin Coruña represented the Philippine Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and Philippine College of Surgeons - Negros Island chapter in his capacity as President and Vice-President respectively, to the 31st Induction and Turnover Ceremony of the Canlaon Medical Society (CMS). In attendance were Drs. Luz P. Acosta-Barrientos (President, Philippine Medical Association [PMA]), Steven G. Bacalian (Governor, PMA Western Visayas), Joan E. Cerrada (Medical Center Chief II, Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital), Filipinas G. Ganchoon (CMS President), Erlinda G. De los Reyes (Ex—Officio, CMS), John Dominic C. Trinidad (Past President, CMS), Michael Thomas E. Salvador (Past Governor, PMA Western Visayas), and officers of various medical societies and past presidents of CMS.

Of note, Dr. Jose Maria R. Coruña, senior partner of Coruña Orthopedic Clinic, served as president of CMS.

“Every year or so, leadership in chapter or national associations change. It is valuable for these transitions to be smooth and formal. I am glad that communication among leaders in these groups remain consistent and open. The dialogue and policies met from these occasions affect healthcare for millions of Filipinos.” For example, a post-graduate course involving foot wounds among young diabetic patients not only includes foot and ankle surgeons, pediatricians, and endocrinologists, but cardiologists who may do preoperative risk assessment for the patient, physiatrists involved in rehabilitation or prosthetics, and many other subspecialties cooperating together. The young trainees attending the course will echo their learning to their co-residents and carry those learnings well into professional practice. The relevance of a multidisciplinary team exists, and it is achieved via membership to professional societies.”
