Orthopedic Surgeon in TDHI and DPOTMH Conducts Casting Workshop
We wish our interns well as they begin their journey as physicians! Dr. Chinkin Coruña taught them an exercise in empathy as well as building their skillset utilizing top-of-line appliances for best outcomes in extremity immobilization. He shared: “It is not easy for a patient with a broken foot or ankle to walk or even stand. Today, you will have the unique experience of applying a resin leg cast, boot walker, and next-generation light cured polymer immobilizer to your colleague. Then as you wear your device, you will feel what it is patients go through daily as they recover.”
The workshop was held last July 23, 2026 at the Function Hall of The Doctors’ Hospital in Bacolod City. The students were made aware that any person can apply a cast. But not everyone applies it well. As health practitioners providing podiatry services, extensive foot and ankle care in Western Visayas, the best knowledge comes with a deep understanding of the patient’s suffering, and knowing where to lead them to receive the best possible care.
A separate workshop was held last August 25, 2026 at the Doctors’ Lounge of Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital (DPOTMH) in Bacolod City. The interns present were able to apply upper and lower extremity casts with the help of former Medical Director for DPOTMH and CLMMRH Chairman Emeritus of Orthopaedics and Traumatology Dr. Jose Maria “Boi” Coruña. The best short arm and short leg casts were awarded prizes.
Learning should be fun. It should involve all involved in providgin healthcare, and must be introduced at an early stage.
Dr. Boi Coruña teaches his grandson Luke on how to use the cast cutter.
