Wound Care in the Philippines: Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration

Together with Drs. Robert Chan (Orthopedic Surgeon), Eleanor Letran (Dermatology), Adrian Tablante (Foot and Ankle), Chinkin Coruña, Merwen Mitchel Musni-Fabia (Foot and Ankle), Luinio S. Tongson (Certified Wound Specialist) and Enrico De Jesus (Orthopedic Surgeon), the Philippine Wound Care Society (PWCS) and Philippine Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (POFAS) shared a session on Charcot Arthropathy: Involving non-operative, operative, and timely wound care for this subset of patients. The 16th Annual Convention of the PWCS was held at Novotel last August 13-14, 2026.

POFAS continues its collaboration with all societies for improving wound care, deformity correction, and lower limb expertise. This persistent exchange delivers state-of-the-art practices delivered by experts for health care professionals. Ultimately, it allows for better patient outcomes for Filipinos all over the archipelago. “We have linkages many professional societies, and each on is unique and special. With PCWS, POFAS has one of the oldest partnerships, and we will keep it that way. This conference stands out with participation of skin experts, integument reconstruction leaders, bone and joint specialists, global industry partners and faculty.”

Wound care may be a challenging task to undertake, but there is expertise in Western Visayas provided by Dr. Coruña. Education and developing skills in detecting and treating non-healing ulcers are important in helping patients and their relatives get back on their feet.

Patients are may be misdiagnosed upon referral, and careful history with physical examination often leads to diagnose with predictable treatment and outcomes.
