Wear shoes when driving. The added protection can help keep your feet safe!

Dr. Chinkin Coruña describes foot injuries over asphalt roads from patients wearing only slippers to be more severe than those wearing proper footwear.

Drs. Rouel Azores (Regent, Philippine College of Surgeons), Juan Agustin Coruña IV (President, Philippine Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society), Romina Mendoza-Torres (Trustee, Philippine Orthopaedic Association), and Aireen Patricia Madrid (President-Elect, Philippine Society for the Surgery of Trauma) met last August 16, 2026 at DZRH within the CCP Complex to discuss care for the foot and avoiding grave injuries from road traffic accidents. They were welcomed by veteran journalist and multiple Golden Dove Awards winner Barbie Atienza for his show “May Trabaho” streaming to thousands of viewers worldwide via DZRH.

Coming from Bacolod and Marawi, Drs. Coruña and Madrid respectively emphasized the core problem of motorcycle drivers using roads at high speeds without shoes. Most of them wear no footwear or just slippers and injuries from these cause soft-tissue injuries that prolong hospital stay compared to those patients with protection. Beginning in Negros Island, the local chapter there will launch on September 7, “Suksok Sapatos sa Dalan”, translating the need to wear shoes when plying through highway. They will be welcomed by ride-hailing and delivery riders where stickers on wearing helmet and shoes will be distributed together with free limb tourniquets. The latter is also supported by lay lectures on how to use them properly as per “Stop The Bleed”, equipping bystanders with life-saving and limb-saving capabilities to benefit patients.

“This collaboration among many arms and chapters under the PCS is beautiful collaborative work which the institution upholds,” says Dr. Chinkin Coruna. Our PCS is felt and the participation is palpable among the societies mentioned above, including the Association of Women Surgeons of the Philippines. “We wish to roll this out to many other chapters and organizations across the country,” he adds. On top of this, the media campaign is strong with the leadership of Dr. Joselito Mendoza of PCS. By 2027, we hope to produce a protocol for consideration that features the hard work our surgeons across many, many specialties.
